Kitty Kitty Meow Meow: Trees and Light

It’s finally nice outside! I took advantage of the nice weather yesterday before work to have a weird little shoot in the forest with Valentina. I realized I was out of film beforehand and had to drive all over Baltimore to find a few rolls of Kodak Portra 400. It seems that it’s not so popular anymore and the shipments come in less and less. I think I paid around $10 per roll and $12 for the roll of 800 speed which is ridiculous. From now on, it’s Amazon.com for all of my film needs. I am all for supporting local labs but their prices per roll of film is insane. I’m still trying to wrap my head around the fact that I spent almost $80 yesterday on seven rolls of film. Ughhhh. On the bright side, I now have a bag of film for the next few weeks.

Back to my shoot. I decided to go with something weird, as usual, and I have been wanting to use a kitty mask for the longest time. I finally found one and the creepiness factor was definitely apparent. Valentina is the poster child for UrbanOutfitters, (really, she actually works there) so her styling made these photos stand out.

I used the typical camera, the Canon AE-1. Next week I’ll be posting from a different camera and with different film, so things should be interesting. I love the lack of contrast and muted colors from Portra so much, they’re hard to stray from. I bought some Kodak Ektar. Apparently there are all of these Ektar vs Portra debates online so I figured I’d compare myself. Maybe this could be the beginning of a new relationship!

As always here are a few digital comparisons:

Thanks for looking. Also, I’m having a film photo show tonight (I’m part of an artist showcase) at The Crazy Russian at 7pm. Check this Facebook event invite to the Interrupted Show for more info!

  1. There are so many reasons not to support amazon that I won’t even go into, but in this case I really think if you can it is better to support places like freestyle or even a place like B&H who make it their business to support photographers and stock their supplies. It is always better to keep it in the industry so that people who know can stay in the business of supplying us with the best product and information. Support your photographer, support your photo retailer.

    • I usually do 95% of the time but I’m still a college student, I don’t work full time and photography is my part time job so it’s hard to pay local prices when I can get it for almost half the price off of Amazon.

I think paying $20+ dollars per roll to process at local labs almost every week is supporting as much as I can.

  2. I love all these photos with Valentina! Film and digital as well. Always have loved country scenery, so doing these in a forest was a plus to me…. Great work again!
