Thoughts About Things and Stuff

Hello everyone! I don’t have any film stuff to show at the moment. I have a ton of stuff to scan but my desk and scanner have been buried under a mountain of homework and various things that I need to sort through an organize. I figured I’d do a blog post on what my photography thoughts have been.

Recently a friend showed me the New55 Film Project. According to their website,”New55 FILM is an instant peel-apart 4×5 film that produces a superb negative, and a positive print too.” It’s not a duplication of the old 55 but a newer type that was recently completely funded on kickstarter.

The results I’ve seen look pretty cool and I’m excited to see what happens when I get my hands on some. Another thing I have been thinking about film related is the Wanderlust Camera. According to their site, the Wanderlust is “Fully loaded, the Travelwide is lighter than a DSLR. In fact, at 275 grams (9.7 ounces), it’s the lightest 4×5 ever made. But thanks to its high-impact unibody construction, it’s also one of the toughest.” and “The Travelwide can focus from infinity down to 0.55 meters (~2 feet), which means you can capture everything from landscapes to portraits.”

It also says that “Travelwide accepts most 90mm lenses, and a Pinwide pinhole is included—so you can start taking photos right away,” which is pretty awesome.

Both of these are worth a try, a light weight medium format is something I hope to give a go in the very near future. I mean, just LOOK at it!

In other news…..I wanted to clear the air about my post on VSCO cam. I got a lot of hate for that post…mainly by people who do photography as a hobby and not for a living…which is cool but in the end it was a lot of one-sided ideals that didn’t even bother to think things through about a medium existing on its own without hurting another. VSCO isn’t killing off film, guys. I recently joined a VSCO group on Facebook and to my surprise MANY people on there talk film! Like, actual film…not “film filtered” imagery. Sure, they all use VSCO (obviously that’s why they are apart of the VSCO group) but for every handful of digital images someone will upload a few of their 35mm or their 120mm shots. I put out a feeler and asked if using VSCO stopped people from buying film and about 8/10 said that it actually made them shoot their first roll and the other 2/10 were digital users who never had any intention of shooting film either way. There were discussions on the new Cinestill 120mm film as well which shows that not only do people who use VSCO shoot actual film, but they also are actively engaged in what’s happening in the community since Cinestill 120mm is pretty new. Many users mixed their sets with VSCO’ed digital and then actual film of their choice. If you don’t like it, then don’t use it. But I’ll tell you right now – VSCO isn’t hurting anything. I always found it really ironic that the same people who bitch about VSCO cam are the ones who also bitch about Lomography which is pretty much what put “analog” photography back in the mainstream with the younger crowd. That’s all I’ll say about that.

ANYWAYS….I’m thinking about doing vlogs (video blog) every so often if my followers on here would actually watch them. I enjoy watching others so I thought maybe you guys would feel the same? I don’t know what I’d talk about yet but I’d figure it out. 🙂

Lastly, here are a few digital images from work this weekend. I shot a festival and a haunted house (the haunted house ones will come later) and the weather was super nice. I’ll include a link to the full gallery when it’s published.
